Bye, bye sugar!

Our new Unsweetened Tomato Ketchup has landed! It's now available to buy through our online store.

For context, none of our sauces include any artificial sweeteners, thickeners, stabilisers or preservatives. That's the promise that makes up our #realsauce motto. With our Unsweetened Tomato Ketchup, we've gone even further. Along with all of the above, it includes no added sugar and hasn't been naturally sweetened with other fruits/syrups either. This is totally unsweetened. 

Creating an Unsweetened Ketchup has been a Sauce Shop ambition for a while now. It's a recipe which Pam and James have constantly been playing around with in their home kitchen. We never release anything that we wouldn't consume ourselves and so it's taken a while to perfect the recipe for this sauce. We think it's worth the wait!

We're big believers in "everything in moderation" and that includes sugar. We also know it's super important for many people to cut sugar out of their diet, whether that be for medical reasons or because of personal preference. We aren't slating our Tomato Ketchup; this is an entirely different product. Our Unsweetened Ketchup is really savoury, whilst still having the classic sour note expected with ketchups. Whilst it isn't a sweet ketchup there's still a subtle, natural sweetness thanks to the almost 90% tomato content and a clever blend of "sweet" spices.

It was important to us that our lower sugar ketchup didn't contain ANY added sugar and that includes fruit sugars. Whether it comes from a date or a cane, the body processes sugar in the same way. Many other brands' recipes include fruits or syrups to replicate the sweetness of ketchup but for the reasons mentioned above, that makes no sense to us. Obviously that made our job a little harder which explains why it took us so long to come up with the perfect recipe!

If you're tasting this compared to our Tomato Ketchup, expect a big difference! In aid of market research, Pam and James switched out Tomato Ketchup for Unsweetened Tomato Ketchup in their own household - happy to report their 3-year-old didn't notice any difference!
